Conditions - Musculoskeletal Conditions
Muscle Strain - A strain is an injury to either a muscle or a tendon. Depending on the severity of the injury, a strain may be a simple overstretch of the muscle or tendon, or it can result in a partial or complete tear. It is caused by twisting or pulling a muscle or tendon. Strains can be acute or chronic. Chronic strains are usually the result of overuse-prolonged, repetitive movement of the muscles and tendons.
Some of the treatments for a Strain include:
RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation
NSAIDs
Ultrasound or Laser treatment
Rehabilitation and recovery treatments
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) - occurs when tendons or ligaments in the wrist become enlarged after being aggravated. The tunnel of bones and ligaments narrows in the wrist and pinches the nerves that supply the fingers and thumb. Repetitive flexing and extension of the wrist may cause narrowing the tunnel a thickening by inflaming the protective sheaths that surround each of the tendons.
Conservative treatment should be tried first, including resting the hands by splinting the wrist in neutral for 1-2 weeks. NSAID's can provide symptomatic relief. Injection into the carpal tunnel may provide significant but temporary relief. Soft tissue work and adjusting the wrist can also provide some relief. If conservative treatment fails, the only alternative is surgical decompression of the nerve.
